In this world filled with social media, the internet and digital advertising you will constantly hear people telling you that you should stop advertising in the newspaper and magazines. I am here to tell you that it is alright to continue those ads if you are not ready to put all of your effort into social media marketing.
Many people I talk to say that they are not ready to give up their monthly spot in the newspaper or quit cold turkey on magazine advertisements. This technique has worked for them in the past and they have no reason to believe otherwise.
People with this mentality are very hard to sway away from the traditional marketing and they may wind up resenting you if you tell them that those ads are pointless. The best thing I have found to do in these types of situations is to integrate their other media strategies into your social media marketing plan.
What does that mean? Well essentially it’s taking the layout for their ad and adding it to your Facebook page. Talk about it, reach a different audience but with the same message. If it’s a coupon and you want to drive traffic to the newspaper, tell your audience about it and let them know that if they want that deal to go and pick up their local newspaper.
If it’s something that is coming up, it’s a good idea to draw attention to it beforehand. Let your social audience know that there is a coupon coming out, or event details coming out in (x # of days) and that they should keep an eye out for it. This will also tie together the two strategies making what you are doing a more valuable asset to the company.
I will admit that although I am more prone to say that newspaper ads aren’t as effective, I recognize that there are still industries that will reach their customer base more easily through newspaper. So there you have it! Not getting rid of old school marketing methods while still using current trends.
