For the next 2 weeks I will be traveling, but like every person who works for themselves, I have to keep up with business even while I’m gone. The problem I usually run into is not having enough room to pack my computer so I’m forced to work directly from my iPad. While I can get a lot of things done from this, I also know that it doesn’t do as much as a computer can.
Since this isn’t my first time traveling while I need to work, I have put together a small list of tips to help you be productive on your next trip.
- Set up as much stuff as you can before you leave. For social media people, this would involve setting up things to retweet later that day, responding to comments, liking or responding to Facebook posts. Obviously this still needs to be monitored throughout the trip, but if you can get a good chunk of it done before you leave, you will be able to relax more during the trip.
- Find a time for work and a time for play. The thing I have found that works the best is waking up before the people you are traveling with. If you are in your 20’s, there’s a pretty good chance that the people you are traveling with won’t be up until 10 or 11, so wake up around 7, hop on your iPad (iPhone, tablet, etc.) and get things set for the day.
- Respond to as many e-mails as you can in the morning. During the day, decide what needs to be responded to immediately and what can be flagged for follow-up either later that night, or the next morning.
- Relax. You’re on vacation. Even though work is important, it’s also important to enjoy your trip.
These are just a few of the things that I have found most helpful while traveling. I hope that these can help the next time you have to work while you are out-of-town.
